Up to One Gigabyte Speed in Mobile Broadband with LTE Technology

The EU has announced its plans of funding a research related to the development of next- generation mobile broadband technology called LTE, which could be the benchmark for future mobile broadband technology throughout Europe. The EU has reserved a sum of 18 million euro for the research, to be released on 1st January next year.

The research promises to put Europe in a far better position in broadband connectivity than it presently enjoys after the development of GSM technology, which is currently being used as the basis of all types of mobile network. The development of LTE is expected to follow the footsteps of the development of GSM, which was an outcome of joint European research, its single market system, and EU funding.

Viviane Reding, the EU Telecoms Commissioner, while speaking on the latest development, said that Europe’s ability to excel in research would make it a pioneer in development of mobile technology in the world, just as it did with the development of GSM technology, which continues to be the standard for all mobile communications even today.

LTE, which stands for Long Term Evolution, may be the promising future of mobile technology. LTE would translate into faster mobile broadband speeds, which could be up to ten times as fast as they are at present.

Variants of LTE are being used all over Europe on a trial basis, and the first commercially sustainable edition is likely to be in the market next year. The EU funding is focused on the development of the highly superior variant of the technology called LTE Advanced.

Some of the benefits of LTE as the EU sees it are as following:

  • Enhancement of network capabilities with faster speeds at lower costs
  • Speeds of up to 1 gigabyte enabling TV and video streaming
  • Optimum spectrum use, better signals and access to broadband ‘notspots’

If you require more information on mobile broadband, or wish to learn more about the services of a specific broadband provider, you can check the coverage of each supplier via their own mobile broadband coverage checkers. By simply clicking on the ISP’s logo at Mobile Broadband Genie and entering up to three postcodes such as your home, your workplace, your local pub it’s simple to check your mobile coverage.
